It’s Time to Plant Your Seeds and Cultivate Your Intentions

Cultivating IntentionsHaving once owned a garden center and nursery and having a huge passion for gardening, I know this weekend is THE weekend to get our gardens growing. Now to me — growing gardens, growing companies, growing ourselves — it’s all the same. That’s the reason I use so many gardening analogies when I talk about developing self-awareness, self-mastery and being on purpose.

I approach Managing Thought® as if I were pruning a tree. When I prune a tree, the first thing I do is decide what I want to accomplish. Do I want to remove the dead wood? Create a certain shape? Bring in more light? More fruit or flowers? Growth upward or outward? Once I have my purpose, I begin to prune, first removing the dead and diseased branches. I then prune the branches that are crossing other branches, sticking straight up, or shooting from the base of the tree. These are appropriately called suckers because they suck up the water, nutrients, and sunlight from the viable branches. Once these branches are removed, I then prune and shape the tree to fulfill my purpose. After completing the process, I turn my attention to the daily cultivation of the tree—how it is fed and watered and its exposure to the elements. This helps the tree resist stress and develop a strong root and trunk system. With less stress, the tree resists insects, disease, and damage. It thrives in its full glory.

To manage our thoughts, we can follow the same process. Before we plan or strategize anything—a career, vacation, marriage, education for ourselves or our children, a corporate initiative—we can decide what we want. Before we say or do anything, such as interact with our family, children, or significant others, or converse with a customer or coworker, we can decide our purpose. We decide what is of significance. We decide what we wish to create in our life and our work.

Then we watch our thoughts and prune those that are destructive and diseased –the thoughts that don’t bring us peace or inspire us. We notice and prune the thoughts that are at cross-purposes, or sucking up our time, energy, and money. These are the thoughts that block our light—our true reality. We practice shaping our thoughts, creating our intentions, and focusing our thoughts, and ultimately our actions, on what matters to us.

In doing so, we accomplish our purpose and fulfill our intention in each moment. We cultivate ourselves daily and develop a strong mind, body, and spirit. We resist stress, disease, and damage. We thrive in our full glory.

Manage Stress During the Holidays and Every Day: Focus on the Essence of What You Want

With plays, parties and events to attend, cards to mail, gifts to buy, guests to prepare for, and year-end initiatives at work, you may find yourself tied up in ribbons. Focusing on the essence of what you want is one of the most powerful ways of thinking to reduce stress and bring about peace of mind and happiness during the holiday season and throughout the year.

During stressful times, we may find ourselves consumed with thoughts of worry, self-criticism, frustration, and even anger. We may feel we have too much to do. We may feel we’re doing things we don’t want to do or not doing the things we want to do. We can rise to a new level of consciousness, restore our sense of purpose and reclaim our peace of mind by focusing on the essence of what we want.

For some practical tips to help you discover the essence of what you want, click here to read Mary’s blog in its entirety on the Vistage Executive Street Blog.

Recapturing the State of Wonder: The Adventures of Ryan and Rocket

Lisa Gautz manages the Managing Thought website, this blog and all of my social media and communication. She does the graphic design and manages my travel and events! Her first priority is her son, Ryan.  Below, Lisa shares a lesson in wonder that she learned from Ryan.

I was having a yard sale and invited some of my friends to contribute things for the sale. Mary gave me a box filled with what I call  ‘true yard sale’ items: Table cloths, an old clock radio, some old picture frames and this:

To you and me – it’s a back massager –something I’d either buy or receive as a novelty gift. To my 2-1/2 year old son — well –let’s just say this item never made it to the sale.

It started out as a swimmer (as it took dive after dive into our dog’s water bowl), then it was a cyclist, a runner, and finally, a rocket ship. To this day, it’s his toy, Rocket.  We have moments of panic when I can not locate Rocket because Ryan has put ‘him’ somewhere unique.

On a daily basis, Rocket goes on adventures with my son through the house, into places I did not know even existed. I look forward to seeing Ryan’s eyes light up and hearing Ryan’s gasp and giggle as he and Rocket experience each adventure.

When I see Ryan and Rocket, I am reminded to be open to new ideas and  look at people and situations in renewed way. I am reminded to wonder and imagine – because these are amazing gifts that I have and cherish. Like Ryan, I want to open and play with these gifts every day!”

Thank you, Lisa for sharing this.

How could you recapture the state of wonder?

Recapturing the State of Wonder

Recapturing the State of WonderWonder is one of  the highest states of consciousness. Wonder ignites our creativity. Wonder lights our soul.

Our best ideas come when we wonder, in a childlike way, what the answer could be, what our next steps could be, when we wonder what’s possible.

I invite you to give it a try.

When I was stuck in a life and career that I thought there was no way out of, I wondered how I could make the highest and best use of my time on this planet. I woke up with the idea that I am responsible for my world, I create my world, and if I want to change my world, I change my thoughts, and so I did.

When I was encouraged by others to document what I learned and share it with others, I developed the workshops. For the first ten or so presentations, I felt fearful and nervous (which isn’t like me).  I wondered about that and woke up with “I am not presenting. I am sharing.  Do not attach to the outcome. Everyone has a duty to test what they learn for themselves, follow the path or change the path.”

When I wondered what to call my work, which could be considered “out there” in the business world,  to intrigue them, I woke up with the idea for Managing Thought®.

When I was asked to write the book, I wondered how others could hear this from ME. I was concerned that I didn’t have credentials on “thought management” and self-awareness. I woke up with ” Truth is truth. Sincerity is all that is needed. Gandhi was a lawyer. Teachers come from unlikely sources.”

When the first edition of my book was inexplicably delayed in the publishing process, I had thoughts of fear that someone else could beat me to the market with a book like this, and I woke up with, “There is no competition for your higher purpose.”

When I wondered how I could make my work available for free to those who might not be able to afford to buy my books or attend a workshop, I woke up with the idea for Page-A-Day and doing a PBS Show.

I have “wondered” my way through calculus and statistics classes, through grieving the death of my husband, through helping my parents through their life transitions, through what I say and do and write when someone asks me for guidance, through handling all kinds of opportunity and difficulty that comes my way. And I get my answers.

We all have the ability to wonder, in a child-like way and get our answers.

Don’t take my word for it. See for yourself. Instead of needing to solve a problem or having to come up with a solution or not having any idea what to do or where to turn next, I invite you to re-invoke the state of wonder — and see what happens.

The next series of daily inspiration thoughts of the day are powerful statements and questions on re-invoking the state of wonder.  There are three posts a day.

What Could You Do With Your Extra Hour?

It’s that time of year, where many of us turn our clocks back and we find our selves with an extra hour.

As a kid, I thought it was so cool to get an extra hour and, with a sense of adventure, I wondered what I could do with this extra hour.

As I grew older, I kept the tradition wondering how I could enjoy this free gift of an hour. I have used the hour to pen thank you notes, treat  myself to a hot bath, take a nap, re-connect with friends and family, read a good book, sing and dance like crazy, wonder about my next adventure in life….

A few years ago, as  I was savoring my extra hour, I realized that every hour is a gift. Every hour is a gift! And I wondered what my life could be like if I approached every hour, every moment as a gift. How amazing could that be!

I became inspired to practice being fully present, making every moment a gift to myself and others.

When I practice being fully present, I find myself inspired by everything around me. And that is indeed a gift. I guess that’s why it’s called being present!

This year, I am using my extra hour to enjoy the company of some very dear friends.

Today and every other day, I am using my hours being on purpose, loving, thankful, wonder-full, creative, impactful,  inspired….

What could you do with your hour?

We All Want a Life Well-Lived

A Life Well LivedWe all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same. – Anne Frank

In my Managing Thought® workshops, whether I am with 6th graders, teenagers, college professors, CEOs, soccer moms, life coaches, spiritual teachers and people of different religions and ethnicities – everyone comes up with the same list of thoughts that aren’t working for them and the same list of what they truly want from a life well-lived.

Most everyone is surprised by this. Anne Frank would not have been surprised. And I am not surprised.

We are like snowflakes. We are each unique AND we are all snowflakes.

The next series of daily inspiration thoughts of the day are powerful statements and questions on creating a life well-lived.  There are three posts a day.

If you want to focus on creating a life well-lived, feel free to take the Managing Thought® How Do Your Thoughts Rule Your World? ®  Self Assessment. You can store your results, re-take the assessment, and do side-by-side comparisons to see just how much you have changed. You can also set a reminder to take it again, see how you are doing and choose what you want to focus on next.

I Am Worthy

Am I Worthy? In my workshops the last two months, there’s been a lot of discussion about unworthiness and undeserving. Men and women alike revealed that they thought they were undeserving of prosperity, happiness, great relationships, and creating a good life of for themselves. They shared thoughts of being unworthy to succeed, to lead, share wisdom, receive love, accept compliments….

Unworthiness was a big for one for me. I felt I did not deserve to fulfill my life’s purpose and I felt unworthy to teach others the Managing Thought® process. These thoughts and emotions were augmented when people asked me what qualified me to develop and teach people how to manage their thoughts. What credentials, what degrees did I have? When I wondered about it, I woke up with the thought: Teachers come from the most unlikely sources. I then remembered that Gandhi was a lawyer!

So I gave myself permission to make my life’s purpose my highest priority and lovingly share what I learn with others.   Then a funny thing happened–from that day forward no one asked me about my credentials and the work is endorsed and recommended by highly credentialed people across many disciplines.

What we focus on expands. If I think I am unworthy, then I create unworthiness. When I think, I am worthy, then I create worthiness.

The next series of thoughts of daily inspiration are around the theme of worthiness and deservability. There are three posts a day offering guidance on how to turn what is significant to you to reality by daily cultivation of our minds, bodies and spirits. Daily Thought Cultivation

Daily Thought Cultivation Mary LorePracticing Managing Thought is a lot like pruning a tree. When I prune a tree, I first decide what I want. What’s the purpose? Do I want fruit or flowers? Health and vitality? More or less shade? A certain shape? Height or width? I decide what I want and prune accordingly. I take out the dead and diseased wood. I take out the suckers – the branches that are sucking the water, the nutrients, the light from tree. I prune to fulfill my purpose and I pay attention to the daily cultivation of that tree—how it’s watered, how it’s fed, its environment, and its exposure to natural and unnatural elements. In taking care of the tree’s daily cultivation, the tree resists stress and is less susceptible to insects and disease and can thrive in its full glory.

When I manage my thoughts I decide what I truly want, what truly matters to me in my life and work. I watch my thoughts and let go of the thoughts that are dead and diseased and the thoughts that are sucking up my time, energy and money. I choose and focus on the thoughts that serve my purpose. I pay attention to my daily cultivation, how I’m fed and watered, my internal and external environment. Less things bug me or dis-ease me, I fulfill my purpose and I thrive in my full glory!

The current theme of my Daily Inspiration Thoughts of the Day is Daily Thought Cultivation.
