What Seeds Could You Plant? What Intentions Could You Cultivate?

PrioriTree-Spring-Equinox-New-MoonToday is the first new moon since the spring equinox.

Contrary to common practice, THIS IS THE TIME to make our resolutions. This is the time to plant the seeds of our future–what we truly wish to create this year.

During the 90′s, I worked on the start-up of companies and the turnaround (fresh start) of companies in crisis. AND I owned a garden center and nursery and taught gardening classes for kids.

To me – growing plants, growing companies, growing ourselves and our children – it’s  the same process and I am passionate about growth!

That’s the reason I use so many gardening analogies when I talk about cultivating self-awareness and creating the highest vision of ourselves.

I approach Managing Thought® as if I were pruning a tree. When I prune a tree, the first thing I do is decide what I want to accomplish. What’s my purpose? What difference do I want to make?

Do I want to remove the dead wood? Create a certain shape? Bring in more light? More fruit or flowers? Growth upward or outward?

Once I have my purpose, I begin to prune, first removing the dead and diseased branches. I then prune the branches that are crossing other branches, sticking straight up, or shooting from the base of the tree. These are appropriately called suckers because they suck up the water, nutrients, and sunlight from the viable branches.

Once these branches are removed, I then prune and shape the tree to fulfill my purpose. After completing the process, I turn my attention to the daily culti­vation of the tree–how it is fed and watered and its exposure to the environment.

This helps the tree resist stress and develop a strong root and trunk system. With less stress, the tree resists insects, disease, and damage. It thrives in its full glory.

As we practice self-awareness and managing our thoughts, we can follow the same process.

As we plant the trees of our lives, our work, our marriages, our retirement, ourselves in every role we play in work or life, education for ourselves or our children, our retirement, our health, and prosperity, a corporate initiative–we can decide what we truly want.

Before we say or do anything, such as interact with our family, children, or signifi­cant others, or converse with a customer or coworker, we can decide our purpose. We decide what is of significance. We decide what we wish truly wish to create.

Then we watch our thoughts. We prune those that are destructive and diseased -the thoughts that don’t bring us peace or inspire us.

We notice and prune the thoughts that are at cross-purposes, focused on what we don’t want –sucking up our time, energy, and money, blocking our light, our true reality.

We practice choosing and shaping our thoughts, creating our intentions, and focusing our thoughts, and ultimately our actions, on what truly matters, what we truly wish to create.

We pay attention to our environment, the culture we are creating, the people with whom we choose to surround ourselves.

In doing so, we accomplish our purpose and fulfill our intention in each moment. We cultivate ourselves daily and develop a strong mind, body, and spirit. We resist stress, disease, and damage. We thrive in our full glory.

Take some time today to reflect and wonder.

The Spring Equinox – Time to Celebrate Our Life and Work and Enjoy a Fresh Start

Spring - Creating IntentionsSpring is a time of transition in nature and within ourselves. Many traditions around the world mark this time as the true beginning of the year. (March was the first month of the year in the original Roman calendar – a fun fact!)

As bulbs burst through the soil and buds form on the trees, we too can celebrate our life and work  and enjoy a fresh start.

Back in the 90′s, I had the pleasure of working outside of Paris for several years. There, I learned to celebrate the simple joys of each season. We celebrated when the green beans and asparagus were in season, when flowers were at peak color, and of course, there was Beaujolais Nouveau day!

To celebrate spring, I prepare a special meal, organic and colorful. I set a beautiful table graced with daffodils.  I light candles with a floral essence. I say special prayers. I count my blessings and I invite blessings into my life and work.

I look at what I am thankful for in my work, I wonder what’s possible and re-ignite my sense of purpose and refresh my vision and intentions.

I use this inspiring video to refresh and renew my intentions for my life.

It’s the Launch of Mindfulness Monday™- and You’re Invited!

Change Your World with Mindfulness MondayEverything that we say, do, and create first begins in thought. Everything.

I can’t begin to describe how powerful each of us is – how powerful you are. Every thought we have is creating. For better or worse. Individually and collectively.

Most of us have no idea what we’re thinking. We think we’re thinking positively, we’re not. We think we are focused on what we truly want – we’re not. We keep living each day like we did yesterday – stressed, uninspired, trying to figure out our true purpose.

The good news is we all have the ability to be aware of our thoughts, know if the thought is working for us or against us, and choose powerful thoughts that serve our purpose.

Mindfulness Monday isn’t about thinking “happy” thoughts. It’s about choosing thoughts that are in alignment with who we truly are and what we truly wish to create in this world.

We all have the ability to turn worry into wonder, fear into inspiration, stress into purpose. We do. It takes practice.

We’ve mastered all the thoughts that are not working for us. Now it’s time to master thoughts that serve our purpose.

It’s Time to Plant Your Seeds and Cultivate Your Intentions

Cultivating IntentionsHaving once owned a garden center and nursery and having a huge passion for gardening, I know this weekend is THE weekend to get our gardens growing. Now to me — growing gardens, growing companies, growing ourselves — it’s all the same. That’s the reason I use so many gardening analogies when I talk about developing self-awareness, self-mastery and being on purpose.

Happy Spring! It’s time to Renew Your Intentions

Mary Lore Spring RenewalThe sweet smell of spring is in the air. Trees are budding, bulbs are blooming. It’s a time of renewal. And a great time to refresh and renew ourselves.

Many of us are experiencing incredible shifts in our lives, experiencing grief over the loss of what once was, and fear of the uncertainty that lies ahead.

We think something’s wrong and nothing is wrong. We are experiencing the same type of challenge that a seed faces when it bursts through its seed casing; that a seedling faces when it bursts through the surface of the soil and is exposed to the light and the wind and rain, and; that a bud experiences when it bursts into flower.

We are in the midst of creating the next highest vision of ourselves.

Our brains, bless their hearts, have no idea how to help us during this amazing transition.

You may notice that old, negative, weak thought patterns are emerging. They can be the result of our previous practices of fight, flight, and freeze thoughts. They can be the result of conclusions we’ve drawn on what the brain believes are similar experiences. They can be a result of habits we’ve developed in dealing with past circumstances.

Remember to see these thoughts for what they are—thoughts. We are the observer of these thoughts, and we can choose whether to utilize these thoughts or not.

When these weak and negative thoughts reappear, they can be frightening. You may ask yourself, “Why are they back? I thought this was long gone, not a part of my nature anymore?” The key observation and reminder here is that the reappearance of these thoughts is, in fact, a form of detoxification—a purification of your thinking. Old, negative, weak thinking stored in your brain from past experiences is rising to the surface to be washed away. The fact that you are observing the thoughts and emotions, and not unconsciously surrendering to them, is indicative of the growth you have achieved and worthy of celebration.

Take a moment to acknowledge how far you have come and affirm your commitment to creating the next highest vision of yourself.

If you have no idea what that next highest vision of yourself is — then it’s time to re-invoke the state of wonder. Wonder what’s next, with genuine curiosity, and a sense of adventure.

Then take care to re-establish your connection with your highest awareness and re-align yourself with your true nature: Do the things you love to do, that energize you, vitalize your health, and make you smile and laugh.  Help someone. Take time to be quiet each day. Practice thankfulness.

When we are in a state of purpose and intention, wonder and possibility, thankfulness, calm and happiness, we are in touch with our highest awareness and become inspired. We receive creative ideas on what to do next and how to do it and remarkable things start to happen.

Overcoming Obstacles

Overcoming ObstaclesPicture this:  It’s packing day. Moving day is tomorrow and I get a voicemail from the realtor to say the sale of my parents’ house has fallen through! The buyers’ bank, which had pre-approved the mortgage, has discovered that the buyer had co-signed on a loan that went south and is now backing out of the deal. This blog is fifth in the series sharing lessons in Managing Thought during the recent sudden move of my parents from their home of forty years.

My eyes opened wide.  My jaw dropped.  I gasped.

The voicemail continues as the realtor explains that they have eight people who want to see the home immediately. She is confident they’ll have another offer soon. And all I am hearing is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…because I am busy thinking thoughts that are much louder – Oh my God! What do I do? Everything is almost packed. When my dad hears the news, he could have another stroke! How could this happen? They pre-approved the loan! I can’t show the house now. It’s a mess…..

I took a breath, exhaling deeply, and thought about what I was thankful for. Immediately, I realized I was thankful that the realtor called me, and not my dad. And I was thankful that I knew how to manage my thoughts, that I could see these fight, flight, and freeze thoughts for what they are, just thoughts, not reality, and that I could choose powerful thoughts of vision, purpose, and wonder…which led me to wondering what was possible.

I asked the realtor what the quickest possible close with a new buyer could be. She told me a cash sale with no inspection. I wondered how we could find such a buyer and let it go.

Now on to the big question – to move or not to move?

I knew my dad would be worried about the money. The plan was to sell the house first and then move so they wouldn’t have the expense of two homes and so they could use the proceeds from the sale to purchase the long-term care guaranty option, which guarantees their care for the rest of their lives.

I reflected on the original vision, purpose, intention, of the plan to move right away.

In moving now, my parents qualify for independent living. If my mother’s dementia progresses or my father’s health deteriorates, they would not qualify for independent living, and then would not be eligible for the long-term care guaranty. The long-term care guaranty brings my father peace of mind and the ability to fulfill his intention of taking care of his wife and himself until their death.  The new home, with all of its services, allows my dad to focus his energy on what matters most and to have some fun. The new home allows my dad and mom to get out, interact with others, take part in activities, go on dates and have a great quality of life.

I became inspired and decided to move forward with the move, trusting in the process.  I shared all this with my father including the wondering about the cash sale buyer. My dad then said his neighbor had expressed interest in buying the house several months back. I called the neighbor.

The end result – We moved the next day. My parents got their first month free in their new home. And in that month, the neighbor bought the house for cash with no inspection! My parents purchased the long-term guaranty and all is very well in their world.

We often set goals expecting things to happen a certain way to achieve the goal. Invariably, something happens that’s different than we expect, and our brains deliver us fight, flight and freeze thoughts. Without self-awareness, these thoughts of worry, frustration, blame, fear etc. can rule our world. When we practice managing our thoughts, we know that life isn’t always in a straight line. It can be curvy. And when something happens that’s different than we expect, we can pause to add light, take that breath, choose powerful thoughts of vision and purpose, thankfulness and wonder and be amazed as remarkable things start to happen.
